In September 2011 Charlotte held a special pre-launch event at Bletchley Park to showcase her published memoir about her life. The book has been extremely popular and well received. Inspired by the positive feedback and requests for more, Charlotte is currently revising the book to expand on parts of her life.

Secret Postings – Bletchley Park to the Pentagon charts Charlotte Webb’s live from her rural upbringing in Shropshire to pre-war Germany, where she experiences the Nazi regime first hand. A few years later, 18 years old Charlotte joins the ATS and she soon finds herself in the covert world of Bletchley Park, the Government Code & Cypher School’s (later GCHQ) codebreaking operation during World War 2.

Charlotte’s war did not end with VE day. Instead she found herself seconded to the Pentagon, where she worked on paraphrasing decrypted Japanese messages. War time in America was considerably different to what she had experienced in Great Britain.

World War 2 changed Charlotte’s life forever. She describes her life back home, her service career, marriage and post retirement work with the community.

My time at Bletchley Park gave me greater confidence to decide my own future. I don’t recall ever having a plan for my future before the war. The war did make me more secretive – we just didn’t talk about our time at Bletchley Park. All Bletchley Park recruits had signed the Officials Secret Act and we respected the duty it placed on us to be discreet about our war work. We never spoke to friends or family about our work, not even other Bletchley Park friends. You could only talk about work to those in the same work space and even then, talk ceased as you left the office.

To this day I am reticent to talk openly about many things. That discretion has become second nature. It made writing the book difficult. Time has passed and I now feel able to open up more in the book. This has partly been from the amazing feedback I have had from my readers, who ask for more detail.

My time at Bletchley Park changed my life. Writing my book about that time has enriched my life further”.
