Dear Codebreaker – Finding Margaret Rock Video

Dear Code Breaker Margaret RockI’ve prepared a short video introduction to Dear Codebreaker to tempt you while you wait for the launch of the book.

It’s been a very tricky few weeks. The highs of celebrating my 40th Birthday and the lows of a project that isn’t going to plan. Dear Code Breaker will be available on 1 August 2013.

In the meantime, I’ve prepared a short (but not perfect) video, introducing my Margaret research. There is a glimpse of some of the photographs and letters that will be included in the book and accompanying website.

Last week the story of Margaret was featured in The Portsmouth News (a few details about me and the book aren’t quite right). Click here to read the article.

Another very exciting bit of news is that Etc Magazine have included my research about Margaret in their Hampshire edition of the magazine. It’s a double page spread on page 76 & 77. Click here to take a look. You will see a rare photograph of Dilly Knox, who Margaret worked with at Bletchley Park. He is stood on the right of the photograph behind Margaret.

I think the article looks great. What do you think?

    • Joanna, Thank you so much. There have been many hours of trial and error involved. There will be many videos in the accompanying website to introduce each chapter, the people, as well as interviews with others. I did a good course to help with with it all too…. So thank you.

  1. Keep up the good work, Kerry!

I’ve been studying the work, have visited Bletchely several times, and have met some of the surviving codebreakers – I consider them all heros, and their work is still vastly underappreciated. Met Mavis Batey at the Park when her book on Dllly was published, and she autographed a copy for me.

I certainly hope that Turing is pardoned – tried to sign the petition for him some years ago, but not accepted since I am from across the pond. No good deed goes unpunished, eh?

Reading about Margaret Rock in the article is quite touching, you have to love someone like her.

How can I buy your book?

    Best,

    Eric

    • Eric, thank you for your comment. I am glad you enjoyed the magazine article. Margaret’s story is touching and the reason why I’ve decided to publish a book of letters is because they give you an intimite look into the lives of the Rock family. You feeel there with them following in the the drama of war, excitement and loss. The letters are far more powerful than words I can write.

The printed book will be available worldwide from this website and Amazon from 1 August 2013. The ebook will follow shortly after that.

I was at the park the day Mavis Batey did a book signing, so I could possibly have passed right by you! Next time we’ll get to say hi.

      • Yes, we must have been in the same room at the same time, when Mavis was signing books! I was hanging around with John Burns, of the NYT.

BTW, I’m a friend of David Kahn, you may have referenced some of his books, although when he wrote “The Codebreakers” initially, ULTRA was still under wraps . . . . .

        Best,

    • Thank you Robert. I am pleased with it. Need to sort out a better USB microphone to improve the listening experience. You’ll be pleased to know I’ve mentioned you in the acknowledgements of the book for your help with the book title brainstorming.

I’m waiting to hear that the book’s gone live then I’ll do an announcement.
